The New York Metropolitan Area Chapter of the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL-NYMA) will hold its Spring 2011 Conference on Tuesday morning, May 17th, 9 am-1 pm, at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, 1 West 4th Street, New York City. The theme of the conference is "From Generation to Generation: Jewish Genealogy in 2011."
PROGRAM: 9:00 am Registration/Networking/Light refreshments 9:30 am Opening remarks Roz Friedman, President, AJL-NYMA 9:40 am Making Connections: Introduction to Jewish Genealogy Robert Friedman, Professional Genealogist Mr. Friedman will cover basic methods and resources for Jewish family history research. Beginning with oral history and "family archives" of photographs and documents, genealogists use sources like the US census, immigration and naturalization papers, vital records, cemetery and funeral home records, newspapers, city directories, and telephone books. These materials may be in the form of handwritten documents, printed books, microforms, or databases and images on the Internet. Methods for recording and displaying genealogical data include printed forms and computer software. The origins of Jewish names and how to deal with spelling variations are also important topics. The presentation will be illustrated with many examples, and handouts listing key resources will be provided. 11:00 am Family History in the Digital Age - David Kleiman, Curator, Loeb Visitors Center of Touro Synagogue and President of Heritage Muse, Inc. Mr. Kleiman will provide an independent overview of software tools, digital resources and research (online and CD) and mobile technologies in family history research, looking specifically at trends in digital resources and software tools and methodologies for assisting and directing library patrons. *Following the formal program, AJL-NYMA invites the entire community to a reception in honor of retiring librarians Aviva Astrinsky, YIVO Institute of Jewish Research, and Philip Miller, HUC-JIR.
