Hello Jewish Librarians! I was directed to this listserv by a local Jewish Librarian who hoped it might be helpful to pose my question to this wide audience. I am currently in a Multicultural Issues class at Denver University as part of my degree in Library Science. Our professor has given us the assignment of briefing the class on characteristics of different racial or ethnic groups in America whom we might serve as librarians. We are supposed to focus on tidbits which might help a practicing librarian provide excellent service to a person from one of these groups. I chose Jewish-Americans. I was hoping you might have some helpful suggestions on how to ensure interactions go smoothly for a librarian who is not Jewish themselves. Perhaps there are customs we might not be aware of? As an example, one student shared that as the only male clerk in his branch, he is often summoned to the desk when a Somali family visits because they view the library as a place of business and Somali men only wish to do business with other Somali men. Though an extreme example, I hope that helps illustrate the kind of information I am looking for. I appreciate your time and effort, Danica Hall Library and Information Science graduate student Denver University --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) =========================================================== Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
