HEBREW UNION COLLEGE - JEWISH INSTITUTE OF RELIGION Library Technical Assistant [Part time] Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion Klau Library - New York Campus PRIMARY PURPOSE To provide services as part of library operations by cataloging books, and some music materials, in both English and Hebrew. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Produce copy cataloging for printed monographs and some music materials, primarily in English, but also in Hebrew. Cataloging is done directly in OCLC - using dual-script fields - and exported to the Libraries' local Virtua system. Descriptive cataloging follows current national standards and local policies. Subject analysis and classification follow Library of Congress standards and local practice; 2. Provide reference assistance as requested. The standard of performance expected in this area is for reference requests to be handled professionally and processed in an accurate and timely manner; 3. Participate in a variety of cataloging and administrative operations, including but not limited to the following: a. In / Out data processing; b. Checking books and other materials out and in for library patrons; c. Putting books and other materials on reserve for library patrons; d. Shelving and repair of books; e. Carrying out day-to-day Library operations and adhering to Library policies in a timely, accurate and effective manner. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will demonstrate: 1. Relevant educational experience, preferably in an ALA accredited program, or a combination of education and experience; 2. Knowledge of the Hebrew language, including rules for Romanization, as prescribed by the ALA-LC transliteration scheme for Hebrew; 3. Thorough knowledge of MARC21, AACR2, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, Library of Congress Subject Headings and Classification; 4. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective work routines and procedures; 5. The ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others in a dynamic and collaborative work environment; 6. Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications.
