I classify and shelve it with the adult fiction, which is what its author
intended.
My understanding is that American publishers us the YA designation for
marketing, and any book whose main character is a young person will get that
label today.  Were The Diary of Anne Frank, or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to be
published today, they would be classified as YA books.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Book Thief

Friends,

Now that the book “Book Thief” is a movie, I have
a question for school librarians.  Do you think the book is appropriate
for children?  I asked this question of the author when the book first
came out.  He responded that that was not his intention, but that it was
marketed that way in the USA
by the publisher and cataloged as such in the USA .  Personally, I would not
have
recommended the book for children or even young adults unless they knew a great
deal about the Shoah and were very mature.
