Paula -- You're right about his intent. He mentioned it at his acceptance speech at the Conference in Phoenix.
It was the first STA Teen Book Awardee, so was not intended for a younger audience. Most of the "Older Readers" STA-winning books have been for "Older Children", which I always took to mean the 10-14 group. In our Library we put it in the Adult Fiction section. My sense is that there's more of an audience there.
