I too would love more input on this book. I've thought of having the
author come to speak, since it's an interesting topic. But the book is
kinda salacious for seniors. I would have no hesitation to put it out
for adults. Maybe more hesitation for kids.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] question about Cut Me Loose

Hi Mirele:

This is a tricky situation! Does your school have a collection
development policy? A collection development policy can protect you
from having to personally make a judgement call and can outline
procedures to have a book removed from a library. I do not think
Amalia's suggestion of hiding the book behind the desk solves the
problem. If you do not have a collection development policy, now would
be a good time to develop one with the head of school and or other
leaders within your community.

Let me know how I can be helpful!

Best,

Is your school Orthodox or UltraOrthodox? Have you read the book? If
the answer to the first is no and the answer to the second is yes then I
believe that this is one person's opinion about the book. There are
several reviews on Amazon (one very astute one in particular) that lays
out what the book is about and discusses the meaning of its contents.
It seems to be a raw account of what happened to the author 15 years
ago. For a certain part of the population it sounds like it would be
dangerous but for others enlightening. It is your call but I think
promoting the book might cause controversy (because the teacher might
make a stink to others) whereas putting it on the shelf for someone to
find might be a better solution. It just depends on the make up of your
school population. The reviewer seems to feel that the girl never got
any proper lessons on behavior so that this is a cautionary tale. All
of this said I have removed purchases from my shelves because of
negative comments that could have caused upset. I worked in an
elementary school where there was more parental screening than there
possibly would be in an upper school. But then I am a coward and try to
avoid conflict if possible. All of this said I have not read the book.

I just bought a copy of Cut Me Loose by Leah Vincent for our library.
After I bought it, one of the teachers read it and complained that it
teaches kids bad lessons. She told me that I should not have it in the
library. I'm not one to censor, but I am one to question whether I
should promote a title or leave it, inconspicuously, on the shelf for
someone to discover. Are there any school librarians out there who have
encountered similar issues with this book? How have you handled them?

Thank you!
