Duke University Libraries seeks an engaged and knowledgeable librarian for
Middle East and Islamic Studies. Scholars of the Middle East and/or
librarians fulfilling the qualifications who are interested in supporting
the research and teaching mission of Duke University are encouraged to
apply. The ideal candidate should possess an understanding of research and
teaching in Middle East and Islamic Studies and should be familiar with
humanities and social science research and teaching methods. The subject
specialist provides advanced reference and bibliographic assistance, and
will be expected to develop online services and resources, including
research guides and digital collections, and to work with the David M.
Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library on providing access to and
facilitating the use of materials on the Middle East. The position is in a
highly collaborative and innovative department of ten librarians who
partner with members of the Duke community to support pioneering research
and teaching in and about countries outside the United States.

Interdisciplinary, cultural studies-inflected research and teaching
activities which synthesize social science and humanities methodologies
have informed the development of Duke University Libraries’ Middle East
collection over the past fifteen years. Supported by an acquisitions budget
of about $200,000 (not including grants and one-time funding), Arabic,
Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish holdings have grown exponentially, mirroring
the rising enrollments in Middle East-related language classes and
increased linguistic diversity of FLAS-funded graduate student research.
Expanded academic interest in the region across academic disciplines has
guided thematically broad collecting in humanities and social science
fields, not just of printed materials, but also of films, online resources,
and rare historical source materials. Duke works closely with the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in building research-level
collections to support a joint NRC Title VI center.
