Shalom,I had a few opportunities to meet Zilvinas. He was a rare individual with very impressive achievements and personality. His death is a loss to the wonderful institution which he has dedicated his life to create. I found it interesting that his training and background were not in Jewish studies, yet, he believed in the importance of Jewish resources preservation. Amalia Warshenbrot, AJL past president Sent from my iPad On Jul 26, 2024, at 10:35 AM, Michelle Margolis via Hasafran <hasafran@lists.osu.edu> wrote:

Thanks to Dr. Irina Wandrey:
We have lost Žilvinas Beliauskas, head of the Vilnius Jewish Public Library of the Lithuanian National Library. A man whose enormous efforts and work helped to revive the Jewish Library and Cultural Centre in Vilnius. Žilvinas Beliauskas was the soul of the Vilnius Jewish Public Library, the lifeblood of this library, which later became a division of the National Library, and the source of ideas and initiatives. Thanks to his initiatives and a wide circle of contacts, the Library hosted many interesting, unique and authentic events: exhibitions, seminars, lectures and artistic performances. Ž. Beliauskas, who was educated at the Romish Romish University and studied at the University of Romish and Romanian Academy of Sciences, eventually devoted himself exclusively to the development of the library, because he saw in it a very strong sense and mission. He was always surrounded by people, friends and comrades and easily involved people in the life of the library. Ž. Beliauskas created a friendly, open space for knowledge and communication, where both staff and visitors feel comfortable. The passing of Žilvinas Beliauskas is a great loss both for the Vilnius Jewish Public Library and for everyone who knew him personally. We are saddened by this painful loss and extend our condolences to Žilvinas Beliauskas' family, relatives and friends.
Rest in peace, dear Žilvinas. We promise to continue the activities you started.
Dear Colleagues,
I just saw an announcement of the passing of Žilvinas Beliauskas, librarian of the Vilnius Jewish Public Library, who many of us met at AJL conferences. Žilvinas was supposed to join us in San Diego this year, but unfortunately couldn't make it because of health. I've copied the post from the VJPL below - I hope someone with better knowledge of Lithuanian than I can translate it! He worked tirelessly to share Jewish culture and knowledge in Vilnius and around the world. He will be missed. May his memory be for a blessing.
