Concert and Program

*La Nona Kanta* is a tale of survival and courage. This program is a
celebration of the life and work of Flory Altarac Jagoda (1923–2021), the
National Heritage Award–winning, Bosnian-born, Sephardic singer and
composer, with live music by Susan Gaeta, Tina Chancey, and Howard Bass of
Sephardic ensemble Trio Sefardi. This program was written and developed by
Trio Sefardi, and includes interview footage from the documentary *Flory's
Flame (courtesy of JEMGLO)*.

Discover how Flory turned the tragic fate of her family and Balkan
Sephardic culture into a celebration of five centuries of faith and
tradition, giving meaning to the rest of her life and delighting audiences
worldwide.

A brief presentation on the Museum's acquisition efforts and access to its
collection will precede the program.

To learn more about the Museum’s efforts to collect and preserve original
artifacts from Sephardic Jews who suffered displacement, persecution, or
discrimination under the rule of Nazi Germany and its Axis partners between
1938 and 1945, visit the Sephardic Communities and the Holocaust project

   - Sephardic Communities and the Holocaust Initiative

The Museum depends on its collection of artifacts, documents,
photographs, films, music, and oral testimonies to help us teach the
lessons of the Holocaust and to stand as evidence of what happened for all
time. These items form the basis of the collection, and we are in a race
against time to rescue them before the eyewitness generations are no longer
   with us.

   - Sephardi Jews During the Holocaust

The Nazi Holocaust that devastated European Jewry and virtually
destroyed its centuries-old culture also wiped out the great European
population centers of Sephardi (or Judeo-Spanish) Jewry and led to the
almost complete demise of its unique language and traditions. Sephardi
Jewish communities from France and the Netherlands in the northwest to
Yugoslavia and Greece in the southeast almost disappeared.
