Dear Rebekah,
I took Josh's class at the California Rare Book School. It is a great course
and he is a wonderful teacher.
I would like to add that AJL is starting up what is called the Rare Hebrew Book
Cataloging clinic. It will be leaning more in the direction of cataloging, but
you are welcome to join and check it out.
As for an actual course, perhaps one in the near future can be offered through
AJL Classroom.
All my best,Haim

I can recommend Joshua Teplitsky's course - I know him well, and he's an
excellent teacher, well versed in Jewish book history (full disclosure: I also
co-direct a project with him that focuses on the movement of the early printed
Jewish book :) ).  I know others on this list have indeed taken this course and
enjoyed it, and they can chime in directly as well.
As far as learning: I co-teach a regular course at Columbia called Jewish Book
Cultures in Early Modern Europe. For that, I adapted Bruce Nielsen's excellent
libguide for Jewish book history for Columbia; it's a constant work in
progress, but hopefully will have some resources to get you started.  When we
taught it during covid, I created a site with some basic resources - it needs
some updating, but might be useful as well.
Unfortunately there isn't a single book that provides a good comprehensive
overview (yet), but the Encyclopedia of Jewish Book Cultures is a wonderful
resource, with many essays on the major topics in the field.
I'm also happy to be in touch if I can be of any help in this area!
With best wishes,
Michelle

Hello,

I am a rare book curator at a small liberal arts college, seeking this list’s
expertise to find intensive learning opportunities in the history of the Jewish
book, open to librarians, with an eye to undergraduate teaching rather than
personal research.

This summer at CalRBS, Joshua Teplitsky is offeringThe Jewish Book from Scroll
to Screen. If any anyone has first-hand experience taking this class when it
was last offered, I would appreciate your advice.

The University of Hamburg is not offeringHebrew Codicology this summer, sadly!

There’s also this summer’s offering at University of Toronto:Paleography and
Provenance in Printed Hebraica

I often keep my eye on the London Rare Book School, California Rare Book
School, and University of Virginia Rare Book School, but the offerings are
slim. I am open to travel to the UK, and Israel.

Are there wonderful opportunities I am missing? Thank you!

Rebekah
