Dear Colleagues:

We want to bring to your attention a remarkable new book of poetry by Catherine
Madsen entitled NORDWAHR
In a world where we incur certain obligations by accident of birth and take on
others out of gratitude, the claims of nature, history and personal history
accumulate over the course of a lifetime into a bewildering conflict of
imperatives. Catherine Madsen's NORDWAHR is an attempt, not to resolve the
conflict, but to look searchingly at one body of claims: Jewish thought and
history, Inuit thought and history, longing for a lost place, love between
wounded people, the lingering admonitions of a Christianity long rejected, the
hardship and beauty of the North and its uncertain future. A poetic tour de
force and a major contribution to Jewish American literature.

Madsen is the author of The Bones Reassemble: Reconstituting Liturgical Speech;
In Medias Res: Liturgy for the Estranged; the novel A Portable Egypt; and the
libretto for Robert Stern’s oratorio Shofar. She has served as a contributing
editor for the inter-religious journal Cross Currents and the Yiddish Book
Center’s magazine Pakn Treger.

I was deeply moved by the intensity of the work and the grappling with the
perplexity of modern life and orbiting many realms.
