Dear colleagues and friends, In view of developments over the past year and after yesterday's emails, I have decided to unsubscribe from ha-Safran. Please feel free to contact me directly regarding any professional matters, especially if you think I can be of help.
I do not follow social media and do not read online comments in any form. I am sorry to see that their 'discourse' practices are increasingly seeping into ha-Safran, which starts to read like an online political 'discussion' forum. I understand that this cannot be controlled by the leadership, let alone by the manager of this listserv, but only through the thoughtfulness and consideration of the community itself. I would like to ask those who strive for overt politicization of AJL-no matter in which direction-and who continue to bring up sensitive issues to consider that this politicization might force some members with precarious status in the US, i.e., noncitizens, to rethink their membership. Moreover, and more importantly, in my opinion, it endangers the existence of AJL altogether in the long run. Not being connected to you through this listserv will hurt me professionally and personally, but even when I delete political opinion pieces, questions, and discriminatory attacks instantly, they still bother me too much, regardless of their political or cultural orientation. Furthermore, they continue to live on my institution's server.
