Dear ha-Safran subscribers, Speaking only for myself, I'm deeply saddened that a listserv member has felt compelled to leave the listserv because of recent exchanges. I would like to note that Konstanze's decision is not a call for censorship. It is the opposite. It is a principled personal decision no longer to subscribe based on criteria which she has clearly articulated and shared. I don't entirely share her point of view on this matter - I will not be unsubscribing in part because I think the line she draws around politicization is murkier than she allows - but I thank you Konstanze for the courage of your convictions.
I can only hope that the content of ha-safran will return to a level where you will feel comfortable re-subscribing. I would like to ask those who strive for overt politicization of AJL-no matter in which direction-and who continue to bring up sensitive issues to consider that this politicization might force some members with precarious status in the US, i.e., noncitizens, to rethink their membership. Moreover, and more importantly, in my opinion, it endangers the existence of AJL altogether in the long run. Not being connected to you through this listserv will hurt me professionally and personally, but even when I delete political opinion pieces, questions, and discriminatory attacks instantly, they still bother me too much, regardless of their political or cultural orientation.
