Official statement from Beth Israel:
“We are grateful that no one was injured in the fire at Beth Israel
Congregation in the early morning hours of January 10. The cause of the fire
has been established as arson, and a suspect has been arrested. We are thankful
to the fire department, law enforcement, and to everyone checking in on our
community. As Jackson’s only synagogue, Beth Israel is a beloved institution,
and it is the fellowship of our neighbors and extended community that will see
us through.
We are still assessing the damage to the building but will be continuing our
worship services and other programs – locations to be determined. Several
churches have extended kind offers for Beth Israel congregants to use their
buildings as a worship space as we rebuild. We are a resilient people. With
support from our community, we will rebuild. Beth Israel Congregation has been
the Jewish spiritual home in Jackson, Mississippi, for over 160 years. We are
devastated but ready to rebuild. We are so appreciative of the outreach from
our community here at home and beyond. If you want to support our rebuilding
