Thanks, Rachel. I saw the headline today and am appalled.
Some thoughts:
After the fire-bombing of the synagogue in Sacramento in 1999, I was
involved in the re-creation of their library. (The tragedy took place
during the AJL conference in Boca Raton. We raised about $1800 in cash.)
AJL members were very generous in quantity, but we were overwhelmed with
the number of books sent. I can go into detail if people are interested.
I have a number of questions:
Do they have a dedicated library space?
Do they have a librarian in place? What is the person's
training and ability to evaluate material?
What books were there? How much were they used in the past 3
years?
There are a number of things we can do, individually, as institutions, and
as an association. I recommend that we create a fund to assist them and
send money through AJL. We can assess and respond to their needs over the
next couple of months, and have a recommendation at the Conference. This
might be a good time to create a template for future incidents.
