Hello, I am Nancy Churnin, a member of AJL. Sally Stiegletz suggested I share this message with Hasafran:

Children's book author and Association of Jewish Libraries member Nancy Churnin will present a free, virtual presentation of her Christopher Award-winning picture book, A Teddy Bear for Emily -- and President Roosevelt, Too, May 11 in a Book Talk with the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. You can sign up and access the talk here:  https://www.trlibrary.com/video/view/V4q6UJCYduU The book, illustrated by Bethany Stancliffe, with whom Churnin earlier collaborated with for National Jewish Book Award and Sydney Taylor Honor winner Dear Mr. Dickens, tells the true story of the Jewish immigrants, Rose Katz and Morris Michtom, who created the first "Teddy's Bear" to thank President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt for saving a bear on a hunting trip -- and for his kindness to immigrants. The Christopher Award celebrates work that "affirms the highest values of the human spirit" and is one of 10 winning books for adults and young people as the Christopher Awards program marks its 77th year. The honor reflects the Christopher motto, “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness." The book is dedicated to Miriam Udel with gratitude for her help with the Yiddish sprinkled through the book and to the author's grandparents who were Jewish immigrants like the Michtoms.
