The outcome of the "whither the platform" thread was that there was still a strong desire for the Platform. The download numbers have consistently shown some growth over the last three years. Talking with folks at a recent Haskell hackathon, more than half were using the Platform. Even SPJ uses it.
The Platform team is addressing two of the major concerns this time: a) We will now be releasing the Platform in sync with GHC - with the aim of same day release (we've done this with the 7.10.2 RC1), b) The Platform will now include, by default, the latest versions of all packages that are part of it. The other major concern is that, for some uses, it is too big - and we have some people now looking at producing possible "server (no OpenGL)" and "minimal" variants. There are other reasons to get Haskell in other ways, and I think it is both fair and helpful to make them discoverable. Another outcome of the large community discussion is that there are other uses that have other needs, and I don't think we should attempt to make this a Thunderdome match. Did any of these things change, to justify replacing the whole Downloads > page with HP with a straight face? I suppose I could put this the other way: What changed to make the current Downloads page say what it does? I couldn't find discussion on that. But that is water under the bridge: HP is still fulfilling the role "all you need to get a reasonable Haskell development environment", and what is changing is that it is making significant improvements from the upcoming release forward, to do so even better, and meet what the community wants. Put another way, if I take credit (in part) of the site's design, I should > be able to justify every part of it. It takes a village, no? - Mark
