The monospace font I'm using ships by default with every current
Linux distro and has for a while. I have no trouble telling the
two apart, even when they're not next to each other.

Tinkering was required only for a single package in my case, and
then because *that* was using technology from last decade; and
I did it over the course of several months because I had better
things to do. Everything else? Just Worked.
