Some other advantages of SMS over phoning:
   - The message is stored on the receivers phone, and can be reread.
   - Phone messages in a noisy environment may be misheard, or not
     heard at all.
   - An SMS message can be send to multiple people at once.
   - It's much easier to script something that sends out SMS
messages than it is to send out voice messages.

Of course, SMS gateways, SMS providers and SMS documentation are hateful.
