Rebased patch against trunk. Reviewboard does not like the size of this patch
and is not cooperating with posting it there too.
If someone could look at this I'd super appreciated it because this blocks us
releasing, and I'd love to be ready when the Hive folks release 0.10 and we can
post a release candiate ASAP.
