I made a few changes because checkstyle doesn't do the right thing in the e2e
test section. For the moment I just excluded most of the code in that section.
I will open up a follow on bug to fix that. I think it's better to do this
and get the rest of this patch in rather than bounce the whole patch since this
patch has been stewing for a couple of months now.
