Also, I don't know if this is really a "false" positive, but I've had
this happen quite often with drives that were seriously overheating
(not adequately cooled, way beyond their advertised thermal range).  I
guess that's actually a "true positive", albeit a reversible one -- I
bought better fans.

Most drives have a temp sensor that you can read via SMART.
