Cifti files only store coordinates for voxel-based grayordinates (1/3 of
the 91k grayordinate space). The other 2/3 of the grayordinates (surface
vertices) do not have coordinates in the cifti file. Instead, these
coordinates are in separate gifti surface files (*.surf.gii), so that the
user can choose which surface type is best for their goal, for instance
displaying the data on "inflated" surfaces for easier viewing inside folds,
processing can be done on "midthickness" surfaces for anatomical relevance
(in MNI or original subject space), and resampling is done on "sphere"
surfaces.
