Forgot to add to the comment that the patch includes the new test from
HDFS-9688 patch with necessary modifications. I think the test can be a part of
this patch, as well as a standalone unit test for 2.8/2.7/2.6. The purpose of
the standalone unit test is to guarantee downgrade support.
