Konstantin Shvachko commented on HDFS-2802:
-------------------------------------------

What if we think about snapshots in terms of versioning.
Suppose we have file versions, which can be rolled on demand. Then taking a
snapshot is just rolling the version of a subtree. Would it be easier to deal
with versions? I am talking about the abstraction rather than implementation.

> Snapshots are point in time images of parts of the filesystem or the entire
> filesystem. Snapshots can be a read-only or a read-write point in time copy
> of the filesystem. There are several use cases for snapshots in HDFS. I will
> post a detailed write-up soon with with more information.
