Konstantin, not sure what you mean rolled on demand exactly. However since you
brought of versioning, the current implementation is based on versioning.
Instead of version for every change, the version is tracked at the snapshot
boundaries. Look at HDFS-4125 and the proposal to use partial persistent data
structure.
