An infinite desktop is nice, but it does not make much sense, in general, to
allow the mouse pointer to move off screen. Either the viewport should 
follow the mouse or the mouse should be restricted to the current viewport.

Yes, I agree that would be an ideal solution. I envisioned future addition
of something like that when finishing the initial implementation of 
compositor last year. However, it is not entirely trivial to implement 
such map and I will not have time to do it in the near future (of course 
anybody can implement it if they like the idea). Therefore, I proposed the 
keyboard combo as a temporary quick solution to the seemingly pressing
concern of disappearing mouse pointer.
