I did a quick test on my laptop:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT218M [GeForce 315M]
(rev a2)

The modes in the log look reasonable both for the LCD screen as well as for
external monitor. I guess it is some magic BIOS that when the external LCD
is connected, the internal one is ignored (that is, it remains black and I
was not able to find any traces of its modes in the log). [Obviously, it
happens only with HelenOS as Linux starts the framebuffer and clones the
screens.]

I will play with it more once I return from my vacation.
