I have the same nic @ home on my GNU/Hurd machine running fine with the stock gnumach-1.2 kernel. I haven't gotten oskit-mach yet. Could you take a look at your boot message for some more detail.
hurd# cat /dev/klog > boot-message & You might have a irq problem which could be solved using the 3com firmware utilities to modify the cards IRQ,IO address, etc. Or pull any devices your not going to use.
