noob to GNU Smalltalk

I'm reading "SmalltalkVTutorial.pdf" to learn the lingo!

Things were going well until `gst' choked on the following:

'hello' at: 1 put: $H

as well as

#( 1 0 4 5 ) at: 2 put: # ( 2 3 )

Is there another way to do the above in `gst' ? TIA ...
