I experienced a similar problem, but I figured out that since I signed up on herokugarden I had to use the herokugarden gem, not the heroku gem. I cannot sign in with the heroku gem but the garden one does work. I don't know if this applies to you, however, but since it sounded familiar I figured I might as well post.
