I've just been wondering about how to solve the same issue. I'm also wanting to run two separate apps, a marketing site at www.myapp.net and the application at myapp.net which uses wildcard subdomains to differentiate between customer accounts. The marketing site at www doesn't need SSL but the application at myapp.net should be all SSL.
I'd like to be able to point myapp.net to one application and www.myapp.net to the other which would be trivial except that I need wildcard subdomains.
