It is pretty much a matter of personal preference. There is no building code
in action here.

As for cloth hinges, I would think use four 6/32 machine screws with fender
washers on both sides.

About the stakes, I would prefer using pet tether stakes. They can be
purchased at a pet store. They ar spiral, and hust screw into the ground.
Some say they don't hold well enough, but I would think they would exceed
the ability of spikes.
