I like using either potassium hydroxide 10-20% or Sodium hydroxide 10-20% for softening nail fragments before processing. Also, keep in mind that soft tissues attached are equally as important and sections of nail beds need to be of high quality. A melanoma under a nail can be a bad situation. Sometimes in addition to PAS or GMS stains for onychomycosis, we have done melanin and iron stains for areas of pigment or hemmorhagic depositions.
