During the Wikimedia Amsterdam Hackathon we were able to discuss the Wikimaps
environment over several days with a fine group of minds.

Please have a look in http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimaps

The plan covers what we are doing + where we are heading.

1. Presenting historical maps in a web mapping service within the Wikimedia
family. Putting together the toolset and interfaces for that.
2. Working together with OpenStreetMap Historic to find a common way to model
historical geodata.
3. Designing tools to employ the maps in Wikipedia

We have a blog post at http://blog.wikimedia.fi/

We are planning to propose a presentation to SOTM, so hope to see you there.

Looking forward to your comments!

Having had many run-ins with wikipedia over the years, I will not be contributing any more to THAT side of things. Please do not make OHM dependent on anything to do with wikipedia ... it will be a reason for many of us to walk away ...

OSM has a good range of tools that will allow historic mapping to grow, but what is missing is something we have been asking for some time, the ability to overlay secondary data layers onto the main OSM map. Not something that wikipedia can help with.
