SODOMY CHARGE PREFERRED BECAUSE IT'S MORE EMBARRASSING, SAYS ANWAR
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri
Anwar Ibrahim told the High Court here today that the sodomy charge was
preferred against him because it was more embarrassing than corruption
or
adultery.
He said the people involved in the conspiracy to topple him regarded a
corruption or adultery charge as normal, so they concentrated on the
sodomy
charge.
He was informed of this by a former commando, Raja Kamaruddin, who
admitted
hat he was invited by the prime minister's political secretary, Datuk
Aziz
Shamsuddin, to join the conspiracy, he said.
"Raja Kamaruddin told me that Datuk Aziz had called a team of commandos
to
his office in the Prime Minister's Department where Datuk Aziz explained
that I had to be toppled and that the prime minister had agreed," Anwar
said under examination by his leading counsel, Christopher Fernando.
He was making his defence at his sodomy trial which entered its 69th day
today.
Anwar, 52, and his adopted brother, Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja, 38,
are
being jointly tried on charges of sodomising Azizan Abu Bakar, 39, the
former driver of Anwar's wife, in Sukma's apartment in Tivoli Villa,
Bangsar, here, one night at 7.45, between January and March 1993.
Sukma, a businessman, was also charged with abetting Anwar to sodomise
Azizan at the same place and time.
Earlier in his evidence, Anwar claimed that several cabinet ministers
and
leaders including Aziz were involved in a conspiracy to topple him.
He claimed that they had a motive to do so because they were angry with
him
for informing the prime minister that they were involved in corruption
and
sexual misconduct.
Anwar said that at first Raja Kamaruddin followed Aziz's plan but later
decided to report the matter to him.
Fernando then told the court that the defence would be calling Raja
Kamaruddin as a witness and would tender a report on the conspiracy
which
was sent to Anwar.
Anwar said Raja Kamaruddin told him that the commando team that was
specially formed to topple him had its first meeting during the Umno
general assembly last year.
"My Lord, since June 1998, they had planned to revive the stories on
sexual
misconduct including sodomy which had been circulated through poison pen
letters," he said.
Raja Kamaruddin also told him that at the meeting Aziz confirmed that he
would be getting help from Ummi Hafilda Ali and Azizan.
Ummi is the author of a letter entitled "Perihal Salah Laku Timbalan
Perdana Menteri" (The Matter of the Deputy Prime Minister's Misconduct)
dated Aug 5, 1997, which was sent to the prime minister together with a
sworn statement from Azizan that he was sodomised by Anwar.
"Raja Kamaruddin knew that both Ummi dan Azizan had apologised and
retracted their allegations but Datuk Aziz gave an assurance that he
would
take care of the matter," he added.
Anwar also said that Aziz was unhappy because firstly, he, Anwar, had
rejected an application for a big contract by Aziz's son known as
"Eddie",
although the contract was finally approved to Edaran Positif, owned by
Aziz's son, on the prime minister's instruction.
"Secondly, Datuk Aziz Shamsuddin, as a senior politician in his division
in
Gopeng, lost the post of division head and he blamed me for it," he
said.
He said that after the incident Aziz defamed him and was one of the most
conspirator.
Anwar said Aziz's action in calling a group of activitists including
former
commandos to plan his downfall was confirmed by the police special
branch.
