Kuala Lumpur, May 31(Hrkh) - Despite being held incommunicado for more than 40 days, Abdul Ghani Haroon and N. Gobalakrishnan came out stronger in spirit than ever.
Both men, released from the Internal Security Act (ISA) detention, looked tired and pale. The two had also lost considerable amounts of weight and some friends did not recognize them when they were brought out to the public gallery of the Shah Alam High Court.
In an evening function to welcome the ISA duo held at home of Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, President of KeADILan, Abdul Ghani said it was hard to describe the detention.
“Just imagine, for 50 days, I could only converse with mosquitoes.”
He added however, that the experience was nothing compared to one who will spend 15 years in prison, referring to former Deputy Prime Minister and political prisoner, Anwar Ibrahim.
N. Gobalakrishnan said he would look forward every evening between 4:30 to 5:00 pm to listen to another ISA detainee, Badrul Amin call for the azan prayers.
"I welcome the arrest and would love to be arrested because this means KeADILan is recognized as a party in which the government is worried about," he said.
Gobalakrishnan also added that he spent his days going through his life since childhood.
"They (the police) gave me an opportunity to think about my childhood, my family and everything in life."
According to the two, the Malaysian police had threatened them with rearrest if ever they were freed by the courts. "They said, even if the court releases you, we will rearrest you," said Gobalakrishnan.
However both men refused to divulge any information about their treatment while under detention. Lawyers of the duo said this was to protect the other eight detainees who are still held incommunicado.
"We will reveal all in two to three weeks time," said one of the lawyers who did not want to be named.
Both men were given an unprecedented amnesty of 24 hours by the Shah Alam High Court to see their families, in the event of any rearrest by the police.
