For co-lo hosting, it was a difference of at least $100/month.  I was able
to justify spending $1500 to go from paying a 1/3 cage at $500/month down to
a 1U at $200/month.  A 2U would have cost me $300/month.  Obviously, my ROI
is much better with the 1U system.  Besides, that GigaByte server allowed me
to use my memory and hard drives.  All I did extra was purchase 2 1Ghz CPUs
which were real cheap.

So, yes, it does matter to go from 2U down to a 1U.  At least, it was for
me.
