if i put the external ip in the cmd line the server will not start, it will
say connot allocate server udp port. this is the only way i know a LOT of
people can run a server, is to assign the server to the lan ip, forward the
ports from the external ip, to the lan, so others can connect useing the
external, but you on the same lan have to connect using the lan ip.

You should not be able to connect by polling the internal IP. If you
can, the host process has bound to the internal IP, and in Source this
means that and NO OTHER.

Check the server startup logs for more detail.

You should use your external ip (using the explicit command line switch,
not specifying DNS, but an IP) and if you want to connect from the lan,
make a forwarding rule to get to it via the servers external IP address.

Umm... yeah...
You might not have read it right, or I might not have been clear enough...

What is happening is, I have set it up to use the external ip.
I can connect to it over the lan fine, I just use the lan ip.
It is set up as an internet server. I have made sure that sv_lan is set to
0
If someone tries to connect to it using its external ip address, they
can't
connect. It either gives them a "lan game" error or it just times out.

this is pretty is how it is. you can't connect to a lan server using an
external ip address. you have to connect to the lan ip, while everyone
else
on the other side of your modem has to connect through the external ip
address. and just the fact that its showing up at all with the external ip
address... means its more then likely working just how it should

Ok, here is my problem. I have two computers, one that connects directly
to
the internet and the other (the one that I mainly use) connects through
it.
I am trying to set up the hlds on my router and so far it works fine,
I've
managed to get it to recognize its external ip address and it appears in
the
server lists.

My Setup:
---------
Main Use PC -> Networked -> Server PC -> USB DSL Modem
192.168.0.2 Crossover 192.168.0.1
             cable Running HLDS v1120

The problem I get is this: the ping shows up as "?" as does the map name.
The users shows as "0/0".

If I add the network ip (e.g. 172.199.20.48 (not the real one - real ip
is
dynamic)) address to the server lists, it works perfectly and
I can join. But, I want to set it up for myself and a few friends to join
over the net. Nobody but me can join (I join on LAN ip).

Sv_lan is 0 btw...

I have gone through Steam's tech support pages and done all the stuff
that
they suggest. I have even emailed the address in the hlds readme file.
None of this has helped. In fact, I think it has made it worse as before,
I
could see the ping and the number of users allowed (still couldn't see
the
map name or connect).

I tried it on a friend's pc with version 4.1.1.0 and it showed up
perfectly
but gave me the message of lan server only local connections etc... blah
blah blah...
In this case, I couldn't get round it so I updated to the 4.1.1.1
standalone
server. This then gave me all of the above errors. I am now running the
v1120 and still have all of the same problems.

If anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it, I would love to
hear
how you did it.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be a blessing.

Thanks,

Chris / Ishamael
