Do you have multiple IP addresses on the firewall? If so, are you sure there's some sort of SNAT rewriting outbound packets back to the same incoming IP that the client is expecting? I've seen this before where an aliased IP was NAT'd back into my LAN. On out the outbound, the packets were sourced with the primary IP of the firewall, which completely confused things on the client (or master server) end.
