Well, 9% cpu power did not scare me much, for that was more or less what
I've got with 4.7 when idling. I moved over to 5.0 because of a memory leak
related to linux binaries, reported by some sources (those that are really
a pain in the neck and refuse to reboot servers once in a while because of
bad code, hehehe).

But you can't expect new features to consume less CPU power can you ?
Specially when so MANY changes have been made, so many newer features,
specially when the sources for this system have exploded in size.

I know code size doesn't matter (I said CODE, fellows ! hehehe), since M$
has a lot of code and we see what they've got, but in this case we know the
good tradition of the *BSD coding. In this special case I'd say that amount
of code IS significant, and if you compare the growth of code VS the CPU it
is using when idling EVEN WITH HLDS loaded, I think it is reasonable.

Specially considering my configuration is half of what you have:

SINGLE p3 550 MHz, 256 MB of ram and 6 GB SCSI hd, running one single hlds
process (peak at 65% of CPU power with 12 ppl playing).

Honestly ? I would encourage you to give 5.0-current a try. You know that a
couple of months DO make a lot of difference when it comes to freesoftware,
specially FreeBSD. Download/install 5.0-DP2 and cvsup the sources. make it
all (the make buildworld/installworld and kernel did not change a bit, but
LINT did) and then run your favorite applications.
