When i was running 2.4 players were quite often having registration
problems and many complained of lag even though i had plenty of cpu
horsepower. With CSS being even more demanding without tweaking the HZ
of the 2.4 kernel i bet the same thing is probably true(others may
disagree). I know players noticed the 2.4's limitations and noticed it
when i switched to 2.6. The comments went to registration was much
improved and lag is a non-issue(except when i forget to allocate enough
bandwidth <G>). AFAIK yes players will notice the difference and IMHO i
would stick with a 2.6 distro.

Considering my cpu usage with 14 players max..rate of 10k..ticrate of
500 and max cpu spikes of 50% with an average of less than 20% i'll take
any possible elevation of cpu usage for thee better memory management of
2.6. I am running 1.6, adminmod, hlguard and steambans. I have the
hlguard's wick turned all the way up as well.

When i ran this setup on 2.4 my cpu usage was about the same but i had
memory management issues. 2.6 kept my cpu usage the same..removed the
memory management problems and increased server performance.

Well, OK, I see this works fine for you, but I'm talking about css -
maybe there's a difference, dunno for sure?

And if you would let your server run with kernel 2.4, would players
recognize it? Of course they see less frames when typing rcon stats, but
does this affect game experience?

Would it be kind of "cheating" to let the server run with higher ticrate
on 2.4 because framerate doesn't reach 2.6-higher-ticrate level? It
would just be kind of an illusion that the server runs on higher
ticrate, but effectively it doesn't even reach framerates with normal
ticrate and 2.6.

This machine is a Dell sc420 2.45 ghz p-3 celey machine with 512 megs
ram and a 40 gig 7200 rpm sata drive..:)

I use 2.6 and a ticrate of 500. 2.4 is throttled by the lower

setting but that can be changed.

Yes, I know, but if it works, does the same (at least for players) and
takes less cpu, why change it?

2.4's memory management at least for
me was not what i liked. 2.6's is much better.

I agree for normal case, so it was exactly what I meant: Maybe 2.4 is a
good alternative for using ticrate 100?
