Thanks to Lou I have debugged the problem and it looks to be a problem with the particular GLIBC library that the etch release of Debian uses (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=261237). If you run Debian and experience this hang either upgrade to a newer glibc library or set "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.19" before launching the server to cause your glibc to use some older, working logic.
Has anyone else experienced a problem with the Beta?
