I don't think those are consistent. I've not worked with 2.6 yet, so maybe things have changed, but at least under 2.4, if it can't mount root, it says so and that's where it stops; if it's attempting to kill init, then it at least think it has successfully loaded init --- from root, after mounting it. -Bennett
