Owen, My current development environment is Mac Pro quad zeon. 4gig RAM . Database is MySQL 5 that is running on an Xserve. Some transaction tables have a few hundred thousand records and the production/work order tables contain roughly 60k records. The rest of the tables are less than a few thousand. I will be deploying to an Xserve unless I find we need something better. I have only worked with rails for about 5 months and have yet to deploy to a production server.
It is probably wrong but all of the rails apps so far that we use daily are still actually running in development mode since I am constantly tweaking them. This is an intranet application with 45 concurrent users. Most workstations are diskless linux terminals that boot from the network and run Firefox in full screen kiosk mode. This system is being developed to replace a 22 year-old DOS system that was written in Clipper/dbase. The users think the speed is fine only because they are comparing it to the old dinosaur.
