Maybe it was a reincarnation of the king?
I like that notion. And i love the history aspect of the bat story.
Here, there is almost a scarcity of history. We have houses in my neighborhood
that date to the 1690s - they were built by the witches who fled the Salem
Witch Trials and settled here in an area of town named Salem End... But America
is such a young country and had shown disrespect for Native American history
for so long that there is not a lot that has been preserved. There are places
where the sense of history is palpable, old roads, burial places, some
prehistoric digs not far... But i imagine it is not at all like it is for
people in Europe.

From what I know Salem never had anything except teenage
high spirits (in the way of witches)
being a night creature
the bat has some strange associations
like the sheep - or it the goat . . . ?
Kings have usually been more evil than bats
who are starting to be appreciated
goats too are delicious and harmless

Apropos of nothing, are flavored olive oils popular there? I am having
bread dipped in olive oil that is seasoned with lots of basil and sundried
tomatoes. It is scrumptuous. The bread has some melted cheese and sliced
tomatoes baked onto the top crust... mmmmm

Olive oil I believe was sacred to Athena and tomatoes to Aphrodite
basil is an anaphrodisiac (sexual calminative) related food
related to the Indian 'tulsi' - not sure of spelling
- but not sure of the attribute
bread is of course an epithany
