Wonderful and amazing story about your father's
funeral..
There are cranes in Holland, but very few and they
are an endangered species here.. I've never seen any in the wild.. Lots of
herons which are also among my favourites.. the t'ai chi bird.. so elegant ..
so patient.. lesson there...

More on those geese we saw today...They really are called Nile Geese.. they
were imported from Egypt as a decorative bird and have now spread in
Holland so that according to one site there are 1000 breeding pairs.. We
saw quite a few of the lovely creatures today so I guess we can consider
ourselves blessed, but on the other hand I didn't win the New Year's
lottery here.. > > The Nile goose was sacred to the god Amen..

thanks sam.
do you have both cranes and
storks there? or are those terms interchangable?
my dad loved to
watch the sandhill cranes "dance". we would go watch them almost every
morning in the fall as they migrate thru here on their way south. it was
one of his great joys.
at the funeral during the service
... thinking about the transitory nature of life ... these words popped
into my mind ... and i quickly added them to the ending of my
eulogy:
~~~ free of attachments ... autumn leaves return to
earth. cranes dancing in the fields! ~~~
just as i finished
reading it ... suddenly we could hear cranes flying over ... calling
and rattling as they do. they were also in a formation ... but rather
ragged ... five of them with a gap in one of the "vees". we had just
done a military salute to dad ... as he was a ww2 vet who flew in B24's in
1944. and now here were his beloved cranes ... flying in formantion with
a space for the missing wingman. well ... you should have seen the
tears AND smiles!!! seemed a fitting way to put him to rest.
i love
cranes even more now. ;)
peace friends. may we all
soar.
