First 802.11 has aggregation, so it is possible to combine the unicast media access with other outgoing unicasts. There is also multi-user MIMO coming, which means a AP can talk to several other stations simultaneously. Both factors can make multiple short unicast frames more efficient than a single multicast, but only the linklayer has enough information to decide this.
