You dismissed any solution that requires any host changes as "out of
scope". I call bs: host naming is traditionally within
the purview of hosts, and it shouldn't be surprising that host software
will need to change to support homenet naming.
That's to be expected. It's a Good Thing.
The current state of naming on the usual suspect OS's is infantile. That
I can apt-get avahi, or type Bonjour into a search
window and wonder what I'm supposed to do with it proves exactly
nothing. Things are going to need to be a lot more
integrated into host software before any of this is useful or ordinary.
So your proposition that we can't change anything on
hosts is preposterous on its face.
