Just learn to play that G first valve (on Bb horn) - hear it in tune...play
it in tune. You may need to swing your right hand out a bit...

It's a 5th partial - and no flatter (depending on how you tune your horn...)
than F horn middle E (which many of us play ALL the time) - so playing that
note in tune with that fingering is more of a matter of will than
technology.

Subject: [Hornlist] Descants and alternative fingerings

Hello all,

I'm a longstanding double horn player (standing in F), but I will hopefully
soon be buying a descant (Bb/A(+)/f alto) to complement it. I'm well aware
that it's not an instrument to be left in the cupboard for the "high dates",
and I want to feel as at home with it as I do my double, which I realise
will take a bit of work (not least retraining my thumb!)

So, a couple of questions:

1. Am I being realistic in thinking that I will be able to learn to swap
between the horns without too much drama when I have grown accustomed to the
descant?

2. Does anybody have any tips and tricks for fingering on a descant?
Obviously the most pressing issue will be middle G - 1st valve being flat
and 1&3 being too fiddly to play quickly. Given that there will be an A
valve as well as an f alto valve, there should be some alternatives...
(actually, now I think about it I suppose the f alto side would have a
middle G on open?)

Any input gratefully received!
Martin.
